(Rather listen instead? Click Here!)

You know that stomach churning, sweaty palmed feeling of a business failure or bad decision? Not great for moving forwards in your business, right?

Your confidence takes a big old hit, and getting back on track can seem like a long way off.

Have you ever wished you could just move on already?

As leaders and business owners it’s important to be able to return to our badass selves as quickly as possible because our businesses need us to be bold, visible and valuable to others.

But let’s face it, we are imperfect and leadership is messy.

We are human and fallible.

We make mistakes, bad decisions, and even colossal failures (raises hand!).

We have all taken the nightmare project, worked with a less than ideal client, undervalued our services or taken a risk that didn’t pan out.

As leaders the fall out can result in uncomfortable conversations, loss of income, and some sleepless nights.

But what lies beneath the surface is what we really need to look at. What about:

Those lingering feelings of failure and shame?

The hit to our self-confidence?

The lack of trust in ourselves, our plan, and other people?

The temporary or not so temporary loss in the unshakeable faith we need to succeed?

When we experience these feelings of failure, lack of self-confidence, lack of self-trust, and loss of faith then we start to:

Hide our gifts for fear they are no longer valuable.

Question every decision we make until no decisions are being made.

Don’t believe our offers, products, and services are truly what people need.

Start to compare ourselves to others.

And THE MOST dangerous thing that can happen is we start to see things through a victim mindset.

When we make a mistake or experience a failure, it’s important to see it for what it is…

A test of your Bold Leadership.

We have two choices when faced with failures and perceived setbacks.

We can play the victim.

OR

We can lead boldly.

And here’s the truth:

Victimhood and leadership are mutually exclusive.

You can’t play the victim and lead.

When you start to see things in your business through the lens of “to me” as in this mistake or failures is happening “to me”, you have given your power away.

Committing to standing in your power requires practice and a go to routine for when you’re feeling the stress of a failure weighing you down.

But, how can you move past the lack of confidence, self-trust issues and crisis of faith so you can start believing in value again?

With my 6 step process for moving past a confidence crushing mistake.

Awareness. Never underestimate the power of awareness. It’s the first step in letting something go and releasing attachment to the result. Create the awareness that the result you received is feedback for your actions taken not for you as a person.

Feel it. It’s ok to feel the feelings — the hurt, disappointment, sadness, frustration, etc. However, be cautious of the language you use when speaking to yourself. High achievers like to beat themselves up, blame, shame, and judge themselves harshly. There is no need for that.

Accept what has happened. When we can accept the situation for what it is a lot of those icky feelings fade away.

Take responsibility. What do you need to do to take ownership of what happened? It might be a tough conversation, an apology, or some other amends that needs to be made. Sometimes it’s as simple as saying “I take responsibility for the way this project turned out.”

Forgiveness. Forgiveness is a powerful tool to help us move on and let go. Journal about the situation, the people involved, and the role you played. Forgive yourself and the others involved.

Let it go. I like mantras to help me move forward. Try one of these: I choose now to let this go or Now is the perfect time to let this go.

Wanna try these six steps?

Find a quiet place and pull out a journal. Take 20 minutes to work through the steps. You can repeat this process as many times as you need to.

Love + Leadership

PS. What’s the worst business decision or mistake you’ve ever made? Let me know in the comments…. If you show me yours, I’ll show you mine

What is your first thought when I talk about working with ease and creating greater ease in your life and business?

Is it that ease means easy, and that belief is too contrary to how you think about success and business? It has to be hard, right? That’s what we’ve been taught. A lot of people think ease means easy and that’s simply not the case.

When I think of the word EASE, I think of freedom from pain. Freedom from difficulty. Freedom from unnecessary effort.

Ease means getting the right things done instead of all the things.

Thinking ease means easy is a limiting belief that will keep you stuck in the same “no pain, no gain” business paradigm.

Sometimes ease does mean choosing the easier path. And there is nothing wrong with that.

A few weeks ago I was in the mountains and there was this little rock scramble. As I started to climb it a person behind me shouted “to the right is the easier way.”

I paused.

Which path did I want to take?

What does it say about me if I choose the easy way?

What’s the bull shit story I tell myself about doing things the easy way?

I’m lazy. I’m weak. If it’s not hard, I haven’t really earned anything. C’mon Tara…who said life was going to be easy? Suck it up.

Except I gave up those thoughts long ago so I chose the easy way up the rock scramble.

As I progressed up the scramble I noticed how effortlessly I moved which was actually giving me an advantage over the people who chose the “hard way” up. I actually reached the destination more quickly and could continue on if I needed to. This is endurance.

And this is the endurance which leaders need to have in order to leave a legacy and make the impact they crave.

In this case creating ease was about doing what was easy.

But that’s not always the case. Sometimes doing things with ease actually requires more effort and the ease comes as the payoff.

Say what?

Here’s a little story:

The night before coming home from vacation, I realized that we would be hitting NYC and Long Island just in time for summer traffic out the the Hamptons.

If you’ve never experienced this, it’s like a scene from Armageddon or Dante’s Inferno!

We had two choices — sit in the traffic or find a way around the traffic.

Going on with our trip as planned and sitting in the traffic was the EASY choice. It required little forethought and effort. We might hit traffic or we might not. Either way, this was the “do nothing” option.

However, we wanted to guarantee EASE. No traffic. No headaches. Arriving home feeling refreshed and ready to get back into the swing of things.

To achieve EASE, we needed to put in an effort. We researched our different options. Made reservations for the Bridgeport Ferry which was 5 hours away from our starting point. This made us nervous — would we make our specified time?

Which led to us getting hyper focused on our organization and timing of the first leg of our trip.

The RESULT: We got to our ferry an hour early. We were able to get on the earlier ferry. The trip was totally uneventful. We hit zero traffic. We were able to get out of the car on the ferry to stretch our legs, eat lunch, and use the restroom.

We got home with enough energy to go food shopping, cook dinner and start meal prep for the week.

Basically, the ease just kept paying itself forward.

How this translates to business…

Think about how you are making things unnecessarily hard on yourself because you have a belief around what the path to your success should look and feel like.

What are the stories you tell yourself when you think of taking an easier path?

Where can you create greater ease in your day-to-day business activities?

Sometimes this means simply letting go of activities that don’t yield the desired result. Other times this means hiring, outsourcing, or delegating (even if you’re a control freak!).

Maybe you need to stop giving your energy to people who don’t appreciate it.

Where does your process need to be simplified in order to create greater ease?

What mindset shifts can you make to create greater ease? SO much of this is in the way we THINK about creating freedom in our life and business.

In the comments below, tell me what ease looks or feels like to you as a bold leader.

PS. My group of BOLD LEADERS is a hopping place to find like-minded biz comrades as well as test the limits of your personal growth. Because as I’ve learned, your business doesn’t grow unless you do.

Like you’re letting yourself down.

Maybe you’ve been sitting in resistance for too long.

Maybe you’re feeling invisible in your business.

Maybe you expected to be farther along than you are now.

Maybe you have an expectation that you can keep all the balls in the air without any help.

Maybe you expected to be making more impact or more income.

One of my favorite resources to share with my clients is an audio recording from Steve Chandler on Expectations vs. Agreements.

If you think about it, an expectation is based on one thought – which may not even be rational.

You may not even be totally clear on what it is. It’s a thought pattern, probably a hang up from somewhere in the past, which you are using as a barometer for “success”.

An agreement, on the other hand is something which has to be thought about, planned and decided. An agreement is creative, courageous and bold. Whether it’s with an employee, a partner or yourself.

Whether we realize it or not, as high achieving women we tend to live and die by a set of expectations we have for ourselves. We set unrealistic performance standards that create false beliefs around our worthiness.

In doing this we also create a lot of stress, anxious thoughts, and exhaustion. Steve Chandler says “expectations are toxic.”

True dat!

Want to make a greater impact on the world around you?

Then you need to be continuously improving the way you LEAD.

A great way to do this is to ditch the expectations and start making powerful agreements — starting with the agreements you make with yourself.

Want to lead more boldly?

Try some of these agreements for Bold Leadership:

I acknowledge that any kind of leadership, especially, bold leadership is a way of being.

I will know my vision, core values, and strengths because they are my compass. When my faith and resolve start to waiver, I will do whatever it takes to re-enroll myself in these three things.

I take full responsibility for what is working and what is not working in my life and business. I commit to relentless self-assessment.

I commit to having bold and challenging conversations with myself on a daily basis.

I show up authentically and stand in my truth whatever my truth is in that moment.

I freely acknowledge, agree, and commit to daily mindset work. Soul expansion equals business expansion.

I make self-care a priority because leaders need the endurance to make an impact.

I know it’s not enough to start things, they need to be brought to completion. I focus and finish.

I create strategy that is compelling, smart, intuitive, and feels good.

My dreams and desires are my responsibility to execute on. Consistent, daily action will get me where I want to go. I will make it happen.

Above all else, trust yourself and your inner guidance system. Your intuition will never lead you astray.

Love and Leadership,

Tara

Excited?
Bored?
Full of dread?
Like you’d rather stick pins in your eyes?

So many of the amazing, bold leaders in my tribe struggle with planning. Planning of any kind — weekly planning, strategic planning, yearly planning, goal setting — sends shockwaves of resistance through their entire being.

Planning doesn’t have to feel scary, tortuous, or fueled by fear of impending failure.

My favorite time of the week is Sunday morning while my family is still deep in their sacred slumber.

I’ve identified that sweet spot of time that allows me to sleep in but rise before my boisterous crew and put boots on the ground.

The Vitamix whirs up my bullet proof coffee (coffee + coconut oil + vanilla extract + cinnamon) and I journey back over the last week looking for insights, lessons learned, and reflect on the upcoming week.

For you planning phobes — that’s all planning is to me — a reflection of where I’ve been and the possibility of where I am going.

It’s not about jamming shit into boxes and MUST do’s. It’s not about creating a to do list a mile long.

That doesn’t FEEL good and rarely gets you where you want to go.

When you create the space for flow to flow, you will be amazed at what magic gets uncovered.

I’m a big fan of just letting your brain riff and jam on life. Easy peasy.

The week that seemed uninspired or fraught with challenges turns into soul guiding wisdom.

Here’s what transformed for me during this week’s biz soul session:

For me, this week has had many reminders. The biggest one is to always be bold in declaring your desires. The second you take your intention off bold declarations in your life and business you start to fall back into your comfort zone.

There have been a lot of things not working for me in my leadership. In my desire to reach the end goal, I’ve sacrificed some values which has left me feeling out of integrity.

I’ve been resisting the very things I want the most. Because change on any level is uncomfortable and requires presence of mind. It’s easy to fall back into the old ways of doing things.

Which is what I’ve been fighting this week.

In resisting my truest desires, I am resisting the essence of WHO I am — my vision, values, desires, and strengths. Funny how that happens, huh?

So, why the resistance?

FEAR!

We all have FEAR. It never goes away. Fearlessness is bullshit.

Fear of what?

I’m changing my ideal client and only marketing to women. I fear losing clients who are men because at times they represent 50% of my private client base.

If a man wants to work with me will I turn them away? NO but they have to be a very special man

As I ebb and flow through this entrepreneurial journey my message is changing. It’s becoming more divergent from academic or corporate leadership messages.

I’m speaking out against or disagreeing with old mentors and the training I’ve had.

While I’ve always been a rebel, I’ve also spent a lot of time upholding. I’ve never FIRMLY stood and declared rebel status. I’ve never said, “you know what?”

I’m just a badass hippie and this is my truth.

What happens when I go out there and stand in my spiritual gangster -ish-ness?

Do I attract people who want to be airy fairy? Because that’s not cool with me.

Because while I’m a rebel-hearted FEELER, there is NO denying the power of TAKING ACTION!

So, I get stuck in the duality where you’re either spiritual or your strategic but I’m not sure both can happen.

Do you see my limiting belief?

And we KNOW for a fact it’s not true because I’m the very proof of my limiting belief being false. And so are many of you

SO, where does that leave me now?

Freaking out in fear?
Resisting like a resistant mofo?
Cowering in a corner?
Giving in to ego who wants you to stay small?

HELL NO!!

Planning gives you perspective.

It allows you to see what you couldn’t see before you started.

Planning gives you a path to possibility and TRANSFORMATION.

It’s an opportunity to show up as your MOST CERTAIN self and DECLARE your intentions for a new week.

It’s an opportunity to take responsibility for your next best move and TRUST it’s exactly where you need to be.

You have to plan to be a BOLD LEADER.

Trust yourself. Trust the Universe. Trust God.

What does this look like practically speaking?

Set a GOAL and TAKE ACTION.

Because this is the ONLY way you will make an impact in the world.

And it all starts with a 15 minute weekly, soul inspired planning session.

So kick your planning resistance to the curb and COMMENT BELOW to let me know what you’re declaring for the week.

Love + Leadership
Tara

PS. Grab one of my 20 minute Strategy + Soul Planning Assessments if you’re ready to stand in your BOLD leadership.

Wonder how you accelerate them but then feel exhausted at the mere thought.

Ever wonder how you can get better, faster, more impactful results without working yourself to the bone and feeling burnt out?

Usually what happens is we think we must:

Work harder

Put in more hours

Take another course

Get another certification

I’m here to tell you, that’s really not how you get better and faster, or more impactful results.

I’ve found with myself and my clients that there are ways that you can get these results, but with greater ease.

1. Slow down

I know it’s counter-intuitive but hear me out!

Sometimes we have to slow down to go faster. We need to step back, give it a little more thought, and then move forward instead of pushing forward with reckless abandon and not really having a strategic focus.

2. Know what you don’t know

Stop being so pig headed. You can’t do it all, you don’t know it all. Check your pride, and your ego at the door and admit that there are things that you don’t know.

3. Ask for help

This is so hard for everyone, but when you ask for help and you’re open to receiving help, you get more done. You start to get that knowledge that you don’t have – remember point 2! Find people who know what you don’t know, and ask them for help.

4. Ask yourself these two questions

Leaders – especially bold leaders – they relentlessly self-assess daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly. Two great questions to help you relentlessly self-assess are what’s working, and what’s not working?

We need to be able to be self-critical without being judgemental and getting all in our heads, so once you know what’s not working you need to take responsibility for it. You need to take responsibility for what’s not working, ask for help or just identify it so you can change it.

If we keep doing the same thing, we’re going to keep getting the same result, so what’s not working?

Change it and take responsibility for it. It’s okay that it didn’t work that time round. Very few things are perfect on the first pass. Like I’ve said, the trick is to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND TAKE ACTION.

And the things that ARE working? Do more of them! Celebrate them! We are all so quick to focus on the “failings” (can you see me doing the air quotes?) that we can spend too little time checking out the wins.

If something is working well, figure out why. Is it something you’re insanely good at? Is it a super efficient process you have in place? Is it something you deal with as a team or alone? Study what works and replicate it.

You can do this.

Love and Leadership.

How did things shake out for you?

Do you feel like you’re failing in your business?
That you haven’t achieved what you wanted to in the last 90 days?
That everyone else must be so much further ahead than you?

That’s EXACTLY what was running through my head last week.

So from me to you, with love…

STOP!

Let’s think this through with a little bit of calm and a whole lot of non-attachment.

At the end of any period, it’s critically important to take the time to review, reflect and reset on your goals and strategy.

Here’s why:

In January I created a banging’ 90 day plan. It looked good. It felt good. My metrics were aligned so I knew exactly what I needed to do to achieve success and what it would look like when success was achieved.

The first few weeks were killer. Execution was easy breezy. And then I went from full tilt to a full stop. The ease was gone and it was all grind.

My creativity wasn’t flowing. I was comparing myself to others. My decisions were being made from a place of fear and anxiety. My clients were becoming the most beautiful and painful mirrors of my soul. Except as an empath I didn’t have the right protections in place to process this realization.

And then it happened…

Total breakdown. A spiritual shitstorm that was so intense there was no graceful way out. The next best move was so clear but not so easy.

I’ve spent the greater part of two decades pushing through — head down do the work. When something messy would come up, I would beat the shit out of it until it was small enough to fit in a box that I could shove in the darkest recesses of my soul.

I can’t do that anymore. It doesn’t work. That kind of self-violence leaves you exhausted, depleted, and cripples any chance you have at living your dreams.

It cripples your leadership.

You know that next best move I mentioned…it’s called surrender.

So I let go.

Four weeks into the new year, I pitched my 90 day plan in the fuckit bucket.

I took on no new clients in February and cleared my calendar so I could pour hours of work into myself.

It felt selfish but now I see the selflessness in it. If we stay the same, we remain small forever. We will never be able to share our story, our work, and our gifts with the world. We will never be the light for another person who might need to find their way.

And if I can’t take these bold moves and do the deep inner work, how can I expect my clients to do the work — they must do this work. We must all do this work.

Check yourself before you wreck yourself, you know?

So when I sat down a few days ago to do my 90 day review — to take a deep and critical look at my business through the lens of a LEADER, I was surprised by what I found.

Business growth is directly related to personal growth.

Soul expansion equals business expansion.

Spiritual maelstroms give way to business alignment.

In the absence of a plan and in the midst of an existential life crisis, my business transformed in ways I thought impossible.

Social channels are engaged.

My amazing community of bold leaders are engaged.

My creativity is flowing.

Execution is effortless and easeful and lightening fast.

Clients are booking in and not any clients — the most dreamy, swoon-worthy, inspiring humans who are READY to lead in the world. People I connect with on a soul level. People who are ready to do this kind of work too.

My business is completely aligned.

New programs are being birthed in a way that feels good.

Here’s the GINORMOUS lesson:

Prior to sitting down I was in white hot panic over the failure of my year thus far — sweaty, labored breathing, fuck this adulating thing, give me my corporate job back panic.

Then I got ballsy. I dug in to the P&L, the metics, and all the feels — they revealed my most successful 90 days yet. MASSIVE momentum and wins. Sure, I had to take responsibility for some things but even that felt easeful.

So what I really want to say to you is:

Don’t be so quick to judge your failure or lack of achievement. Go back through the last 90 days with a critical (non-judgmental) eye to see where your have succeeded. We are hard on ourselves. The ‘not enough” talk is loud, incessant and cuts deep. But it’s also NOT TRUE.

Be bold. Be you. - Tara Newman Coaching" width="735" height="1102" />As you know, I’ve been MIA from the blog for a bit. I was working on behind the scenes stuff in my business but more importantly, I was working on MYSELF.

It became very clear to me that my business growth wasn’t going to happen unless the necessary personal growth happened first.

At the end of January, I chucked my 90 day strategy plan out the window and led my business from a place of uncertainty. I wasn’t sure what would be around the next turn and I had no plan.

I made the BOLD decision to not take on any new clients for the month of February while I sorted my shit. I’m a firm believer in sometimes having to take a few steps back to make your next QUANTUM LEAP.

I also believe that as a coach, I can’t ask my clients to do the DEEP INNER WORK if I haven’t committed to doing it myself.

Over the last six weeks I’ve uncovered a lot about myself and my leadership. And no surprise my business is back on track and better than before.

So here is what I have to say about being who you are:

I remember seeing the gangsta rap meme and loving it. It really resonated but something felt slightly off. Maybe a bit too unforgiving.

I tried to think about what was missing for me to really embrace it. That’s when I had my big “A HA” — I wanted to get things handled with love, ease, flow and gratitude.

For a long time I have felt stuck around my messaging and branding.

Things just didn’t want to come together no matter how much I tried to beat them into submission – no label or box felt right. And it shouldn’t because our souls aren’t meant to be labeled or boxed — not even for branding or business purposes.

So much of my confusion came from trying to be someone I wasn’t to ‘fit in’ online or not understanding who I truly am.

I have this interplay of masculine and feminine energy that I never really appreciated. I was so intent on being either/or. A fine example of where black and white thinking isn’t always a good thing.

I would get triggered by every Facebook group post about being too masculine and denying our divine feminine.

Why is it either/or?

We actually need both.

It’s ok that I am unapologetically ambitious and it’s ok that it quietly roars within me.

My ambition doesn’t need to rage.

I can get shit done and be zen about it.

I can hustle with ease and flow.

I can talk strategy and high performance with love.

I can be driven and nurture my desires.

I can be FIERCE about my devotion.

I can start every day and every client call with the mantra – Listen, love, lead.

It’s safe for me to be who I am.

And it’s safe for you to be who you are.

Love and Leadership.

Is there a wrong way to set a goal? Certainly having goals is a good thing. We all know instinctively that we need goals to succeed but if you’ve ever decided on a goal and been super enthusiastic about it only to either lose track of it or interest, it’s possible you’ve been making some common goal setting mistakes.

When I say common, I mean I see them every day in my work with my clients, and even with myself. These mistakes are contributory factors as to why people fail to reach their goals!

The good news is, I’ve gathered the top offenders I regularly see so that you can make sure that your goals count.

1. Setting too many goals

Ever heard the phrase “too much of a good thing”? It doesn’t just apply to ice cream. If you set too many goals, you’re spreading your focus too thinly. Too many plates in the air means you are bound to drop one. Not only does it mean less attention for your other goals, the feeling of failure that can arise from this one missed goal can affect your whole mindset and pull you seriously off course.

So carefully consider your goals and, as Warren Buffet famously advises, choose your top 5 and avoid everything else on your list.

Give your top goals all of your attention if you want to see them to fruition.

Personally, I suggest a maximum of five to seven goals for the year. I would pick three to five focus areas per year and plot your goals within those focus areas. Focus areas can be life, business, career, relationships, family, and finance.

2. Not writing them down

Studies have shown* that people who write down their goals are significantly more likely to achieve them.

It’s something that most of us know. But a lot of us ignore.

Writing your goals down IS more powerful but if you’re writing them down then closing the notebook and forgetting them you’re missing a crucial part. Write them down and REVIEW them. If possible send them to a colleague, friend, accountability buddy or mentor to keep you on track.

It’s this whole process that counts, writing, sharing and reviewing. Be sure to include all parts

3. Not being specific enough

“Sort out website” is NOT a goal it’s a vague intention!

If you’re thinking about a big goal, you’ll want to spend some time breaking down exactly what needs to happen and ideally by when and by who. You can check out my post on Creating a Vision that Gets Results here, to get you started.

When you have broken down the parts of the goal, start setting yourself deadlines. Put them in your planner or diary and make sure that you do at least one thing every day that will move you towards that goal – even if it’s a tiny thing, do it!

If you set a goal but don’t take any action, the goal’s not going to happen. If you set a goal and you set actions that are too big, it gets really overwhelming very quickly.

No timeframe? Goals are never going to get done. Too long of a timeframe, you start to become demotivated, and the shorter the timeframe you set – say you set a 90 day goal – that’s the quickest amount of focus you can get and with giving yourself enough time to complete the goal and keep you motivated.

So, break it down, schedule it, do it!

4. You’ve jumped on the bandwagon and set somebody else’s goals.

This is becoming popular with the increased time we spend on social media. What looks good for your friends might not be what gets you the result you need in YOUR life.

If you set a goal that you aren’t truly passionate about, it becomes nearly impossible to follow through on it – why would you want to?

When you find yourself setting goals refer back to your vision or long term plan and make sure that the goals match that purpose.

5. Not investing in your success

Achieving your goals will require you to stretch beyond where you are today. You’re going to need support, organization, self-management and personal development.

If you’re starting an online business, you might need to spend some money on a website. If you want to run a marathon, you may have to hire a coach. Making strategic investments might make the difference between you reaching your goals or not.

All of these can be goal slayers, but I have one more crucial bonus point for you:

Not believing you can achieve the goal. If you believe you can, you will, it’s that simple.

Now go set your goals!

I’d love to hear how you keep on track with your goals in life and business, you can comment below or join me and my community of Bold Leaders for the support and accountability you need to grow your business without burning out. Because if you’re a leader who wants big impact, you need the endurance to make it happen.

Do you ever wonder how you will differentiate your business in a crowded marketplace? Because let’s face it, every marketplace is crowded these days. The internet has created a low barrier to entry and entrepreneurship is the new hot thing.

So, why would anyone want to buy from you? What is going to make your ideas stick, launch, and last?

I’ll tell you a secret. You need to know where you’re going.

Building a business that grows into something great doesn’t happen by accident. It happens ON PURPOSE.

Your primary role as the leader of your business is to set and communicate a clear vision for your life and your business.

Building a business that creates a legacy requires a bold vision, and a bold vision is a powerful tool.

But, just picturing what kind of house you might like 5 years from now is a wasted opportunity. Today I want to share with you how to create a vision that is concrete and gets results.

This topic came up in my private Facebook group, so I figured I would answer it here. I have four tips for how you can create a vision that gets results. So settle in, get yourself a tea and let’s do this.

1. Create a vision ten years into the future.

I want you to really commit to this – expand from where you are and look far, far, into the future. Here’s what I’ve learned from coaching difference makers– the people that truly make an impact:

If you want to BE a difference maker, you MUST do something different.

Look at your current repertoire and ask yourself:
Where am I settling?
Who must I become to step into my next level of success?
What is THE MOST audacious thing I can accomplish that in doing so sets my world on fire?
What will make me leap out of bed in the morning?
What transformation needs to happen in the next 10 years?

Don’t settle, I want you to have a huge, courageous vision for yourself. But listen, this is HARD. It’s hard to push yourself beyond what is comfortable and believable in this moment. Do it anyway.

A vision of next week is essentially just a to do list. In order to create a vision which will really get you results, we need the long game. To be able to get the amount of thought and detail down and so that the task has the gravitas it deserves, we’re going big (or going home).

2. Take time and care when creating it.

If you’re going to be dreaming big and stepping into your future self ten years from now, that’s not going to happen quickly with 15 minutes of journaling. It might take 15 minutes of journaling for a month to come up with this vision for yourself, so be patient, take time and care when going through this vision.

Don’t be surprised if it’s much harder than you thought it would be. For example, me, I’m 39, so in ten years from now I’m going to be 49 – which is a big jump – and my life is going to be in a different place.

My children will be 17 and 20, which is kind of heartbreaking as a mom to think that far in advance, and my husband and I are going to be in a much different place in our lives. This created a fair amount of resistance for me. Trust yourself to lean in and stick with it.

Consider getting support around mapping out your vision. Someone who will challenge you to think bigger and encourage you to believe in what is possible for you and your business.

3. Ask yourself powerful questions.

Ask yourself powerful questions about where you are in this future state, because visions are supposed to be aspirational in the future state, they’re supposed to be a guide post for you over the next ten years, so ask yourself some powerful questions.

Remember, bold leaders ask great questions.

Here are some examples, don’t feel you have to stick to these but they should kick start your thinking:

What will you be doing for work?

Who will you be working with?

How much money do you want to be earning ten years from now?

Where will you be living?

What five people are you spending the most time with?

What kind of clothes do you wear? Is your style the same or has your style changed?

What does your health look like?

What does self-care look like for you in ten years?

For me I no longer have two small children and I’ll have more time for myself, so what does that look like for me? Am I traveling more? If I’m traveling more, where am I going? Who am I traveling with? You have to get really detailed or as detailed as you can to really visualize this future state that you’re creating.

A great resource is The Firestarter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte. At the end of every chapter she has these really thought provoking questions that could help you maybe create a vision for yourself in the future.

4. Really stretch beyond what you think is possible for you.

Innately we have this ability to keep ourselves playing small, so challenge yourself to stretch what is possible for you.

Remember, you have ten years to achieve it, and I guarantee if you focus on writing this vision and review it regularly, and if you stretch yourself, this vision will come true sooner than ten years from now.

We are always so much closer than we think.

Maybe you have a big vision to expand your team so you can have more time freedom or you want to start another business.Once you focus your mind there and think,

let me think about the kind of systems I need?

what kind of roles do I need to create?

who would I like to have on my team?

how can I grow my revenue to support this investment?

It starts to become really possible and not so impossible once you acknowledge that this is part of your vision.

#TOP TIP If you’re struggling to step into this ten year vision, one thing that I’ve done in the past that’s been really helpful is write myself a note from my future me. Ten years from now I’m going to be 49 so I would write myself a note to 39 year old Tara from 49 year old Tara.

I start it off really high vibe like, “Dear Tara, you will not believe what you have accomplished. Let me tell you all the things that you’ve done. Here’s how you’ve been awarded, or here are the courses you’ve taken, or here’s the business you’ve built, whatever it is that you think could be possible for you. Here’s how much money you’re making, here are all the trips you’ve been on, here’s how your relationship looks like with your husband and your children. “

You’ll write yourself a letter from your future self which kind of makes it fun and takes away some of the resistance from actually creating that ten year vision.

So my four tips for creating a vision that gets results are:

Create it for ten years and be bold

Take time and care when you’re creating this vision

Ask yourself powerful questions

Stretch yourself beyond what you think is possible

For the last few months I’ve struggled with the energy and direction of my mission. I’ve wanted to feel deeply rooted in my purpose but something felt slightly off.

I underestimated the impact that leaving my 18 year corporate career would have on every fiber of my being. In leaving my corporate career, I obtained the most audacious goal I have ever set for myself and achieved a 10 year vision.

This meant new audacious goals and a new 10 year vision.

Feeling into my next steps took time. While stepping into my own business felt joyous and triumphant, it also felt heavy.

It wasn’t until I surrendered to myself, the moment, the feelings that I was able to see clearly where my mission was headed and where my voice was needed.

This is very much a standing on the edge and leaning in moment.

In these situations we all feel fear, self-doubt, and hiccups in our confidence. We are not designed to be fearless beings and courage comes with practice.

Our fear often drowns out all other thoughts and only allows us to hear our doubts and misgivings.

A good leader, a bold leader, knows when to retreat and listen.

They know when to be quiet, observe, and go within.

Because leadership is an inside-out kind of job.

Because a loud voice does not make a leader.

Loud is not bold. Loud is noise.

Leaders…

Bold leaders…

Strategic leaders…

They know when to listen — to themselves and those around them. True leaders know how to listen to what isn’t being said.

Great leaders ask great questions.

Bold leaders will ask the question no one is willing to ask.

They will challenge you to think differently.

They will call out the truth that lies inside of you.

Bold leaders ignite a revolution that you weren’t sure existed.

And here is what I know FOR SURE:

Bold leadership is a requirement for extraordinary living.

It’s a requirement for building a business that lasts — that leaves a legacy (thanks to my husband and father for this reminder).

It’s a requirement for building REAL relationships — fiery, passionate relationships whether romantic or otherwise.

It’s a requirement to build high performing teams that operate from vision and purpose.

It’s a requirement for raising resilient children.

And it’s a requirement for giving, gratitude, and wealth creation.

Bold leadership is a requirement for you to seize success in every area of your life and business.

So, I’ve redesigned my private Facebook community, The Bold Leadership Collective, for those of you who want to commit to leading boldly.

For those of you who are ready to challenge the status quo, have unconventional conversations, to build businesses that last and to do it with integrity.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for being here. Thanks for leading.
